대학을 중퇴한 이래, 외출이라고 해 봐야 편의점에 가는 것이 전부인 22세 청년 사토 타츠히로. 친구는 없고, 수면 시간은 하루에 16시간. 그런 생활도 벌써 4년째로 접어든 상태... 그는 깨달아 버렸다. 자신이 대학을 중퇴한 이유도, 취직을 하지 못하는 이유도, 이 비좁은 아파트에서 밖으로 나가지도 못하는 이유도, 이 모든 것이 거대한 악의 조직 NHK(일본 히키코모리 협회)의 소행이라는 것을!

그런 타츠히로 앞에 어느날 갑자기 수수께끼의 미소녀 나카하라 미사키가 나타나서 이렇게 말한다. "당신은 내 프로젝트에 뽑힌 거에요!". 그리고 그녀가 내민 것은 지금의 생활에서 탈출하여 사회로 복귀할 수 있도록 도와주겠다는 믿기 어려운 계약서였던 것이다.

과연 타츠히로는 미래가 보이지 않는 암울한 현 상황을 타개할 수 있을 것인지? 그리고 미사키의 정체와 그 목적은 과연 무엇인지, 이것 역시 NHK의 음모인 것은 아닌지!?
