30년 전 8살의 나이로 죽었던 소년 제이콥이 중국에서 살아 있는 채로 발견되고, 이민국 직원 마틴과 함께 제이콥이 고향이라 기억하고 있는 미국 미주리주 아카디아로 돌아온다. 아직도 그곳에 살고 있던 제이콥의 가족과 지인들이 놀라움을 금치 못하는 가운데, 소년은 아무도 알지 못하는 자신의 죽음에 대한 비밀을 떠올리게 되고, 그 진실이 서서히 밝혀지기 시작한다.
